Meet Your Hosts

The Jacobs Family

We are a large, energetic, deeply connected family who spent many years searching for a place where everyone could truly gather. With children, grandchildren, and loved ones filling every season of our lives, we wanted a home where laughter could echo, meals could stretch long into the evening, and the outdoors could be enjoyed by all ages.

When we discovered Larrabee Lake, it felt like a gift. A peaceful shoreline, spacious homes, room to play, and nature woven into every moment. It became the place our family had always hoped for.

Our journey has been shaped by foster care, adoption, and the joy of watching many children grow within our home. Opening Larrabee Lake Retreat Homes is our way of extending that same sense of welcome to others. We created these spaces so that your family can slow down, connect, and make memories you will hold onto for years.

How far is Larrabee Lake Retreat from the Twin Cities?

Larrabee Lake Retreat is approximately 90 minutes from the Twin Cities, making it an easy and relaxing getaway without a long drive.

What makes Larrabee Lake special?

Larrabee Lake is a 50+ acre full recreational lake with a maximum depth of 35 feet and no public boat launch. This means privacy is unmatched. On most days, you may be the only ones out on the water, enjoying a quiet and uncrowded lake experience.

What lake activities are available?

Guests at Larrabee Lake Retreat can enjoy classic lake life, including:

Swimming

Fishing and ice fishing

Water trampoline

Dock access with life jackets

Five kayaks

Canoe

Paddle board

Pedal boat

Wildlife viewing, including loons, geese, beaver, eagles, and deer

Jump off the dock, float on the water, skip stones, catch a fish, or kick your feet up and listen to the loons. The lake is yours to enjoy.

What should we know about the waterfront?

The waterfront is a bit unconventional and part of what makes Larrabee Lake special. The bog creates open water that is largely free of weeds and lily pads. The immediate shoreline has a firm sand and pebble mix that works well for launching boats or allowing toddlers to splash and play.

The canal leading to open water can be mucky. Our kids swim it happily, but guests with sensitive feet may prefer water shoes or jumping directly off the dock instead.

Are there outdoor spaces to relax and gather?

Yes. Larrabee Lake Retreat offers many outdoor gathering spaces, including:

Lighted outdoor patios

Four patio areas

Fire pit

Porch swings

Patio furniture, including plush couches and chairs

Picnic tables and benches

Yard games

Relax on the porch swings, soak up the sun, start a fire, roast a hotdog, burn a marshmallow, or simply sit and talk late into the evening.

Are there trails and land-based activities nearby?

Absolutely. In addition to waterfront activities, guests have access to:

Immediate trail access

ATV trail access

Snowmobile trails

Nearby Ice Age Visitor Center and Ice Age Trail

Long Lake access just one mile away, with a public launch into a 1,000-acre lake with a depth of 75 feet

Over 1,000 acres of nearby public hunting land

Whether you want to explore, ride, hike, hunt, or roam, there is no shortage of adventure.

What indoor amenities are available?

With nearly 6,000 square feet of indoor space at The Lodge, there is plenty of room to spread out. Indoor amenities include:

A large bar with seating for 24

Long bar top, four tables, and three TVs

Darts, cribbage, dice, and classic games

A heated arcade and transitional living area in winter

Pool table, ping pong, foosball, basketball, Big Buck Hunter arcade, and a Multicade with thousands of games

Why did the Jacobs family create Larrabee Lake Retreat?

Our family spent many years searching for a place that could truly hold us. We are a large family that loves to gather, laugh, play, and relax, but finding a space with enough sleeping room, room to move, and abundant outdoor activities was incredibly difficult.

Our lives took a path we never expected. What began with volunteer firefighting, EMT work, and foster care became a lifelong calling. Over time, we adopted eleven children, welcomed six biological children, and embraced additional children as permanent family members. Today, our family continues to grow as our older children marry and begin families of their own.

Creating Larrabee Lake Retreat became an extension of that calling. It is a place built for family, community, connection, and shared experiences.

So make memories. Hold hands. Go fishing and jump right in. Snuggle up and read a book. Laugh, play, and relax.

Enjoy your family.

And thank you for letting us be a small part of that journey.

With love,
The Jacobs Family
